Every year, Oklahomans throw away about one waste tire for every
person in the state. Currently, that number totals about 3.5 million
tires per year and
the number is growing! The bad news is that waste tires are associated with some damaging environmental impacts. For one, they can accumulate rainwater which can become a breeding ground for disease carrying mosquitoes. Large piles can catch fire causing air and water pollution. And tire piles are just plain unsightly! |

The good news is that since the advent of the Oklahoma Waste Tire Recycling Act in the early 1990's, nearly all such waste
tires are now collected by
dealers across the state and delivered to tire recycling and reuse programs that find beneficial
uses for the once unwanted discards. In addition to collections by tire dealers, Oklahoma's waste tire recycling program, administered by the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ), also helps people get rid of those unwanted tires that don't get delivered to tire dealers but seem to accumulate in our garages and around our homes. With the proper approval from ODEQ and assistance from one of the state's permitted waste tire processors, community waste tire recycling collections can be offered to the public FREE of any charge for the tire disposal. The brochure "Community Waste Tire Collections" available online or by request, explains details of how to hold an event. Among the services offered by the Solid Waste Institute of Northeast Oklahoma is that of helping to organize local community waste tire recycling collection events. If you're ready for one in your community, give us a call. |
