Household Pollutant Collection Events

Many common products found in homes contain chemicals that make them hazardous
or toxic to human health. Such products, referred to as Household
Hazardous Wastes
(HHW), must be disposed of carefully. Some common HHW items include automotive
fluids, paints, stains, solvents, herbicides, insecticides,
and batteries. When disposed
improperly, these toxic substances may contaminate our soil, water, and air.

|
Communities in northeast Oklahoma and elsewhere recognize that special HHW collections
help reduce the toxicity of wastes destined for disposal at
landfills or incinerators. For
many such communities, especially small towns and cities, the tasks of planning and
managing the logistics and costs of HHW
collection events can be imposing!

The Solid Waste Institute has responded by developing a set of guidelines to help communities understand the essential
steps involved in creating and
implementing a successful HHW collection program. These include planning, site selection,
contractor selection and oversight, event promotion and public
education. For details, see the publication "Local Management
of Household Hazardous Waste" on our website.

We recognize that because communities needs and resources differ, a "one size fits all" approach to HHW collection is seldom
the best. We'll help
tailor a program to fit your special needs. Contact us for assistance if you're ready to look at a HHW collection
program for your community!
