The Solid Waste Institute of Northeast Oklahoma is a regional, nonprofit environmental development organization dedicated to helping communities become cleaner, healthier places.

Established in 1989, the Institute was created to help northeast Oklahomans find solutions to the challenges of managing nearly 500,000 tons of trash, garbage, and other solid waste produced in this predominantly rural region each year.

As a publicly-supported organization, funding for Institute programs is obtained from grants, corporate and membership support, and program service contracts.  Governance for the organization is provided by its board of nine directors and programs are operated by a small professional staff.

Program services are provided primarily to representatives of county, municipal, and tribal governments, and to other public-interest organizations within a 14 county service area.  Services include advisory and technical assistance, research, planning and public education programs.
